For those who need to believe that fashion is an art form, Daniel Roseberry's collection for Maison Schiaparelli is a convincing case.
Check out his latest haute couture collection, for example: two fabric "gazelle horns" from a wool crepe dress embroidered with gold thread, gold pearls, gold cut beads, handmade gold pompoms, Swarovski crystals and rhinestones stick out. A matching tiara sits above the horn and a pair of gold-plated brass pacifier buttons below.
This isn't the cookie craze Roseberry was talking about. This is something even more unusual.

The dresses are bulky, the shoulders are exaggerated, the materials are luxurious, and the details demand careful attention (signature jewelry, called "jewels," shaped like eyeballs, noses, hands, and mouths). These works are all the more beautiful because they refer to surrealism and have an almost perverse character.
At first glance, it’s hard to imagine these designs coming from an unassuming, native Texan—someone who, without irony, likes to live in a cabin in Maine and wear clothes for most of the year. Design from there.

When Roseberry, then 33, from Plano, Texas, was named Schiaparelli's artistic director, he became the first — and so far only — American to run a French fashion house. He wasn't a household name then. He trained at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York and spent 10 years at Thom Browne. He was certainly qualified, but he had no experience running a luxury fashion house, no formal training in haute couture, and no French.

He also had to grapple with the enormous legacy of brand founder Elsa Schiaparelli. A true rebel, perhaps the most important and influential designer of the interwar period, a title contested only by her rival Coco Chanel.
Born in an Italian aristocratic family, Schiaparelli was rebellious since childhood and published a collection of erotic poetry "Aretuza", which is the name of a nymph in Greek mythology. She was sent to a monastery in Switzerland, but left shortly after the hunger strike began. Married and divorced in the early 1920s, she moved to Paris with her daughter, lived an artistic life, and made a group of artist friends. In 1927, Schiaparelli started a fashion business in her apartment, which quickly expanded and became more productive and creative.
A decade later, Schiaparelli would use his relationship with the Spanish artist Salvador Dalí to create one of the most famous dresses in fashion history:lobster skirtDuring the heyday of the Surrealist movement, the organza silk dress with a large lobster painted on the skirt was iconic—and very edgy.

But Schiaparelli's forward-thinking designs haven't kept her out of the mainstream. In 1934, she was the first fashion designer to be on the cover of Time magazine, and later a "special guest" on the popular American game show"What's my line?"
After decades of success, Schiaparelli closed her business in 1954; it remained dormant until it was revived in 2012 by businessman Diego Della Valle.
So when Roseberry walked into the studio about two months before launching his first collection for the label in 2019, he must have felt intimidated? "Ignorance is bliss," he said. "When we first started, it was 63 days until the first fundraiser, and I honestly didn't have time to worry. I didn't have time to have a nervous breakdown. It was too intense.
Despite his baptism by fire and the first two years marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, the designer seemed quiet and confident. "You know, it's funny," he said, "I can stay awake because I'm going to a party that I'm dreading going to, but I'm not sleeping badly because of work. I feel good about what I do .
“Being American gave me a vision,” she added, “and maybe even a greater sense of freedom.”
Roseberry clearly took the time to learn about the founder's home and estate. He has intimate knowledge of Schiaparelli's life, her contributions to the industry, and her archives. He respects history, but also focuses on establishing his own creative language - what he calls a new "code".

"I think people's perception of fashion is that it exists in a glass box," she said, referring to fashion's uniqueness. "A lot of what I've been trying to do over the last two years is break down those glass walls and really expose the process."
Roseberry is a practical designer. He was present and worked closely with his team from the first sketches to the final campaign meeting. “You hear stories from designers who don’t come to the studio or don’t come to the studio once a month. I just can’t imagine it,” he said.
In his first fashion show, Roseberry even walked the runway. When the lights came up, the designer was at his drawing table (a nod to his old studio in New York's Chinatown, where he sketched his first designs for the brand). Models flew over Roseberry, bringing his drawings to life as he continued to sketch live on stage.
According to the designer, sketching is one of his secret strengths. All collections begin with Roseberry’s drawings – he’s drawn since childhood, educated by his mother as a child, which, as he puts it, becomes the “foundation” of his creative process.

When Roseberry got the call to design the look of Lady Gaga's national anthem about 10 days before the US presidential inauguration, he began sketching almost immediately. That day, he drew 12 pictures of the singer's clothing.
The final look, an oversized red silk dress with a matching navy blazer and oversized dove brooch, was completed within days. "It's one of those times where you don't really know the impact it will have on your career and your family until much later," she said, calling it "the honor of a lifetime."
The dress was supposed to be all white, but after seeing the original design, Gaga herself suggested red and blue—and it was "more intense," Roseberry said.
Of course, Gaga wasn't the only celebrity wearing Roseberry pieces. He wore Schiaparelli for Michelle Obama, Cardi B, Kim Kardashian and Beyoncé to accept this year's 28th Grammy Awards. Almost after the Grammys in March, Roseberry began designing this season's couture. After returning from the United States, he spent 10 days in isolation in his Paris apartment, drawing hundreds of paintings every day, “doing everything”, he said.
From an early sketch comes Matador, his fourth series with 26 different looks. In his show notes, he wrote that it was "a series that honors Elsa's vision, but is not a slave to it".

Last year he designed what he called the end of the world, and this year he designed it for fun, to reflect on all the reasons that drive him to fashion.
"The world is not over," he wrote. "We're still here. Fashion is still here. Fashion is still here. Not only is it still here, but its power in a world increasingly reliant on the ease of digital copying and distribution - to keep you In place — bigger than ever."

Whereas last season centered on jewelry (he said it was a direct response to the pandemic, designing flashy accessories to grab attention from those watching his clothes on screen), this one is all about embroidery. Of particular note—a "grotesque" tube-sleeve minidress embroidered with pink taffeta flowers—is, according to Roseberry, how he applied his new code to Elsa Schiaparelli's iconic archive One of the more direct examples of . This dress is a tribute to the AjacketIn 1937, she performed with the French poet and artist Jean Cocteau.
The original shows a sketch of a vase with flowing pink flowers. "It's been redesigned and repackaged, it's definitely a homage," Roseberry said, but he says the look "completely captures the language of today."
