'The Walking Dead' Might Be the Best Episode Ever Aired (2023)

"not here"yesof walking dead'SBest episodes of all time - the best episodes so far since Season 5's Carol and Daryl moment"digested"Arguably the best since season three"Clearly."Honestly, this might be the best episode of the serieswhenever

so maybeit seemsThat's a lofty claim, but I don't know if it's true. Regardless of its strength, living deadIt's rare that a show can be easily split into episodes. Fans tend to identify their favorite storylines: the prison, the development and aftermath of Terminus, or Herschel's farm. (It was never Herschel's farm.) Because of this, what "Here's Not Here" excels at sort of fades into the dust.

But this episode is a very unusual TV show, and in a way, it's an unusual TV show, and it shows whyScotta M. KimpleaThe show's times are often so powerful -- and why it often struggles.

What makes this episode so special is that it's not an episodeliving dead

"Here's Not Here" is entirely series regular -- unless you count Rick's scream at the end (which might resolve one of last week's cliffhangers) -- and the zombie encounters are fairly minimal. Much of the episode is a conversation between two great actors interspersed with lyrical shots of the natural world around them. It is full of references to Eastern philosophies, the nature of being and cheese making. Oh, and there's a goat in there too.

This is actually a sequel to the episode "Clear" from another episodelenny jamesMorgan was tormented and in agony—which had visibly drained him of his mental state. Since the Morgan we know now seems relatively stable, even calm, "Here's Not Here" shows how Morgan became that way, and the results include a forensic psychologist, a mountain cabin, and said goat.

Gimple's script pays close attention to what Morgan is going through. It's almost frantic when it starts off, and finds a shaky but enduring peace of mind towards the end. this transformation It should be too much to cover an episode of TV — even a massive 90-minute episode with commercials — but somehow Kimple, James and director Stephen Williams made Morgan's transformation believable , even beautiful.

Indeed, a lot is going on now in the main story of the series - a horde of zombies approaching Alexandria, glen's uncertain fateStill up in the air - many fans may have found "Here's Not Here" a frustrating watch. (Twitter suggests it does.) But I was so quickly drawn to the Zen mindset of the episode that I didn't mind not addressing what had happened before. i am a believervery difficult if glen surviveswould ruin the show

That's the power of Morgan's episode. "Here's Not Here" does another interesting thing: it removes a lot of the escapism from the series.

'Here's Not Here' eschews escapism in favor of clarity

'The Walking Dead' Might Be the Best Episode Ever Aired (2) Aviation Medical Center

Seems weird to call this show so bleakliving deadAs an "escapist", but that's usually how it works. The lives of the characters are so far removed from our own that any commentary on modern life remains safely cloaked in subtext. You could be fooled. you should not. Either way brings the joy of enjoying the show.

(Video) EVERY Episode of The Walking Dead (SEASON 6&7)

What's special about "Here's Not Here" is that it deliberately forces the audience to see scary, uncomfortable things that we can encounter in the real world. It serves as a crash course in PTSD, by psychologist Eastman (Always Smart)John Carroll Lynch) trying to help Morgan realize that hehookUntil he stops reliving all the worst moments - like losing his wife and son.

Some of it is a bit clumsy, and Eastman seems to bring these concepts to the audience as well as Morgan. But since the affection was so strong, it didn't bother me. This is an episode about learning to be happy with yourself, forgiving yourself for things that went wrong, and finding a way forward. Yes, there are zombies on the fringes, but it's worth noting that Eastman himself was traumatized Things that happened before the end of the world had to be overcome. The topics covered in this episode apply even to those of us who live in a non-apocalyptic world.

Too many of us get caught up in our own past misadventures, constantly reliving the horrible things that happened to us, even thinking that insults become very important in our minds. I don't know if "Here's Not Here" will help anyone deal with their own PTSD - especially when you think the only prescription is "maybe aikido, why not?". — but at least it can open the door to acknowledging that a problem exists, the first step in finding a cure.

it's a thingliving deadThere's no way he'd do it in a more typical episode. By stripping everything down to the bare essentials, and telling a very simple story about two men and the darkness that binds them, the episode becomes concrete, pushing the show into uncharted territory—and thus becoming stronger. good.

Here's Not Here is a good reminder of what Scott M. Gimple does right

'The Walking Dead' Might Be the Best Episode Ever Aired (3) Aviation Medical Center

if"Thanks"- Glenn's final death - yesliving deadAt its worst, it's worth noting that one of the advantages of Gimple's approach as showrunner is that he can move from episode to episode this way for seemingly pennies.

A more episodic, time-jumping structureliving deadFrom the middle of season 4, it wasn't as consistent as I'd like it to be, but it allowed the series to figure out new ways to tell the story and new shuffles.

See how "Here's Not Here" compares beautifully to the first three episodes of the season, which were loud, violent, and sometimes exhausting. This zombie cattle drive premiere is now stretched out episode after episode, and it's starting to feel like an entire TV half-season will last about eight hours, with room for flashbacks and the like. By placing the calming, contemplative "Here's Not Here" at the center of this eight-part series, living deadBuy space for more noise in the future.

I thought of the road during "Here's Not Here"lostUsing the time-travelling character Desmond, he didn't officially join the show's cast until season three, and since then he's generally received at least one standout episode per season, with season three"Eyes sparkle"and season four"continuous"(Essentially the consensus choice for "best episode"lost”) ranked above the others.

Kimpler Editionliving deadVery similar to the structure of the programlost. True, there's no fixed flashback structure like this show, but focusing on close-up characters accomplishes the same thing, and in its looping, disorienting structure, it manages a lot of tricks, lostHe does this by playing with perspective and the way different characters see the same thing.

(Video) The Walking Dead Season 10 Finale: Extended Opening Minutes

As such, Gimple seems to have found his own Desmond in Morgan, a role that allows him to dig out what he considers to be the soul itself.living dead. What makes "Here's Not Here" so good is that it shows that Gimple thinks the show isn't about what a lot of people think it is — the process of dehumanizing living in a zombie apocalypse — but about something far more interesting : The question of what you cling to, what preserves your humanity in such a great death. While it's directly tied to the end of the world here, it could also be tied to wars, disasters, or family tragedies in our reality.

If there's one thing "Here's Not Here" (and Gimple's vision for the show) got me thinking, it's the final character, Morgan telling his story to captured wolves. Undeterred by Eastman's story, Wolfe insisted that Morgan break free and kill anyone he could get his hands on. Morgan wasn't swayed by the threat and just locked up the guy, who's sure to be a future plot point.

That's not to say it's unbelievable, or that this philosophical conflict won't play out in this universe. This is itextra. In "Here's Not Here," Kimple so beautifully hints at the satisfaction of living without killing—in fact, in simple terms, you have to remember that what you have to kill to protect yourself Walkers were once human too, and let them be buried with dignity. .

he doesn't have toreturnExplain to us that there are others in this universe who are heartless and will take everything away. The rest of the series has achieved this with ease. The final scene doesn't remind us of the cruelty of the world, but Gimple highlights a point we don't really need to, and it fits right in with Morgan's flashback's poignant conclusion.

eastman died because it wasliving deadAs much as I enjoyed this episode, I'm not sure I want to watch Lynch and James make cheese every week. But his presence creates a captivating lyrical style that departs from the series' usual format, It's not hard to imagine how the seed of peace she bestowed on Morgan took root in the once-troubled man's soul and spread outward, affecting everyone he saw. Hope this isn't a random trip. Let's hope this is the start of something new.
